Dr. W. G. Sprules, PhD, University of Toronto, to Calgary Council: DO NOT PASS FLUORIDATION MOTION FEBRUARY 25
Dear Calgary Councillors and Mayor:
I am writing to urge you not to support the reintroduction of water fluoridation in Calgary nor to approve further studies on it.
It is probable that one of the arguments you will hear in support of these initiatives is a broadly cited 
study by McLaren et al. (2016 Community Dentistry & Oral Epidemiology 44:274) claiming to show that cessation of water fluoridation in Calgary had “an adverse effect .. on children’s tooth decay”. However a critique of this publication (Neurath et al 2017 same journal 45:496) shows it actually supports the opposite conclusion that there was no effect of cessation because the study was poorly designed and left out relevant data.
I was a co-author on this critique and can authoritatively state that the McLaren et al. study was seriously flawed. Why authoritatively? Because I am an Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Toronto who taught courses in Biostatistics for 40 years. The damaging effect that poor studies can have on important public discourse is incalculable and argues against any further studies unless they are conducted under the most exacting scientific standards by investigators completely independent of any partisan debate.
You may also be told that the only ‘experts’ to whom you should listen are those with dental experience. It is quite clear from what I have written that this is simply not true and that a variety of other professionals such as physicians, biochemists and statisticians can speak about the fluoridation issue authoritatively. They understand scientific methodology and know the negative effects of fluoride on the whole body, not just the teeth. You should not believe anyone who tries to dismiss their views out of hand.
