Brampton Guardian misled public re: water fluoridation

Update November 22, 2018:

Neither the reporter or editor of the news story referenced below ever responded to our email.  Instead, they simply edited their story to read “… this is a recommendation of Health Canada“, with no apology or acknowledgement of any kind that the original story contained an obvious falsehood, which apparently resulted from misquoting October Bell, Supervisor, Water and Wastewater Compliance for the Region of Peel.  They made their correction >24 hours after the story was originally posted, and a day after our email.

[Note that the Brampton Guardian has, as of Nov. 22 2018, also never bothered to correct their fluoride falsehood published in March 2017, claiming that the new fluoride concentration in Peel’s water is .5 mg/L when in fact it is .65 mg/L, 30% higher than stated.  See here: https://www.bramptonguardian.com/news-story/7182264-peel-council-unanimous-in-voting-to-continue-with-water-fluoridation/]

Original version of report by Marta Marychuk, published/shared by Brampton Guardian, Mississauga.com and Caledon Enterprise:

“Fluoride is added to the finished water to prevent cavities, says Bell, adding this is a requirement of Health Canada.”

FFP email response, sent Nov. 18, 2018

Dear Marta Marychuk, Patricia Lonergan, Editor in Chief, Brampton Guardian, Peel Regional Council, Staff, Commissioners and CAO, Jim Nardi, OCWA, W. Mark Holman, Senior Director Engineering at The Coca-Cola Company, Brampton:

This morning a report entitled Drinking water in Peel highly treated, tested and regulated“, written by Marta Marychuk, was published by the Brampton Guardian and Mississauga.com.  It was shared on social media by EIN Pepsi-Cola News.

The article contains a blatant lie attributed to October Bell, Supervisor, Water and Wastewater Compliance for the Region of Peel:

“Fluoride is added to the finished water to prevent cavities, says Bell, adding this is a requirement of Health Canada.”

Peel Staff lie to medi Nov 18 2018

There is no requirement from Health Canada or any other government agency to add fluoride to municipal drinking water, which is why most Canadian municipalities, including a growing number in Ontario, to not fluoridate. I hope that Ms. Marychuk and Ms. Lonergan will take immediate steps to correct this shocking misinformation and admit the error.

Adding fluoride to public drinking water is simply an unlawful choice made by the Region of Peel and other fluoridated municipalities to add this regulated water contaminant, sourced from industrial waste and contaminated with other potent regulated contaminants (i.e. arsenic and lead, both having an EPA MCLG of zero). Unlike chlorine, fluoride plays no role in water treatment.

Ontario’s Safe Drinking Water Act, which trumps the Fluoridation Act, forbids the addition of anything that could cause a health hazard and states that dilution is no excuse.

Endorsements and recommendations are not science, or science based, and do not ensure safety.  Nor do provincial Maximum Allowed Concentrations.

Higher levels of urinary fluoride associated with ADHD in children.  “Our findings are consistent with a growing body of evidence suggesting that the growing fetal nervous system may be negatively affected by higher levels of fluoride exposure,” said Dr. Morteza Bashash, the study’s lead author and researcher at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Grade school math shows that every 385 ml of Peel’s fluoridated drinking water contains 0.25 mg fluoride, the same dose that the FDA, CDC, Health Canada and dentists all agree must be spit out by young children when brushing their teeth with the recommended pea-sized bit of fluoridated toothpaste: 0.385 L x 0.65 mg / L = 0.25 mg fluoride.  CDC on the fluoride content in fluoride toothpaste (“a pea sized bit of paste is approximately 0.25 grams, and each gram contains ~1 mg fluoride): https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5014a1.htm

June 29th, 2000, Dr. William Hirzy, Senior Scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on his union’s opposition to water fluoridation:  Dr. Hirzy was invited to give testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water on behalf of the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) Chapter 280 – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Headquarters:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViNNIwmzTzI

Dr. Hirzy states: water fluoridation is a waste management strategy that has nothing to do with dental health.  “If this stuff gets out into the air, it’s a pollutant; If it gets into the river, it’s a pollutant; if it gets into the lake, it’s a pollutant; But if it goes straight into your drinking water system,  it’s not a pollutant. That’s amazing.”

Drinking water standards allow for much higher concentrations of toxins than do environmental standards.  Water fluoridation at 0.7 or 0.65 mg/L far exceeds the Canadian Water Quality Guideline of 0.12mg/L for fluoride.

Dr. James Sumner, 1946 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry: “Everybody knows that fluorine and fluorides are very poisonous substances and we use them in enzyme chemistry to poison enzymes.  That is the reason things are poisoned, because the enzymes are poisoned and that is why animals and plants die.”
