Artificial Water Fluoridation: The disproportionate harm caused to Aboriginal, Black, and Hispanic communities
COF-COF Journal Fluoridation & Fluoride, September, 19 2012
By Sheldon Thomas, Clear Water Legacy
“The 2006 National Research Council of the Academy of Sciences report on Fluoride in Drinking Water designated kidney patients, diabetics, seniors and babies as ‘susceptible sub-populations’ that are especially vulnerable to harm from ingested fluorides … There is strong evidence that some ethnic groups suffer disproportionate harm. Aboriginal, Black, and Hispanic communities are among those groups…
… Health conditions shared by Aboriginal, Black and Hispanic resident populations
The claim of ‘disproportionate harm’ is built upon three common denominators, shared by all three of the aforementioned ethnic groups.
1. All three groups demonstrate high incidence of diabetes. Diabetics often experience excessive thirst, causing them to drink a lot of water. If the water is fluoridated, their daily fluoride dosage can be elevated well over normal exposures.
2. All three groups demonstrate high incidence of kidney disease. Impaired kidneys interfere with the body’s ability to eliminate ingested fluoride via the urine, causing the body to retain more fluoride than would be retained by a healthy individual.
3. All three groups suffer from lactose intolerance. The inability to drink milk forces many to drink greater amounts of water, or resort to reconstituted beverages and juices, most of which are made with fluoridated water….”

Civil Rights Icon Ambassador Andrew Young Calls on Leaders for Immediate Fluoridation Law Repeal
Mr. Young’s letter further states, “Dentists said fluoridation would help level the playing field for minority communities, but now we see in documents… that African Americans and other groups are actually disproportionately harmed by fluorides… Plus we have more diabetics and kidney patients in African American communities, and they deserve to not be kept in the dark and forced to drink fluorides.”

“…WHEREAS, minority communities are more highly impacted by fluorides as they historically experience more diabetes and kidney disease; and
WHEREAS, minorities are disproportionately harmed by fluorides as documented by increased rates of dental fluorosis (disfiguration and discoloration of the teeth); and…”

“We’ve learned that before fluoridation began, important research was not done to evaluate the possible adverse health effects on the whole body . We’ve learned that large amounts of very basic research has still not been done today. Certain groups are especially vulnerable to harm from ingested fluoride, such as seniors, babies, kidney patients, and diabetics. African American and Hispanic communities experience disproportionate amounts of teeth disfiguration due to dental fluorosis.”
Santa Rosa NAACP Opposes Water Fluoridation as Greater Risk for People of Color
“…Whereas, studies have found that in fluoridated communities, African-American and Latino children are at greater risk for dental fluorosis (discolored teeth from damaged tooth enamel caused by fluoride exposure) and,
Whereas, a blue-ribbon panel of scientists has identified kidney patients and diabetics as being especially susceptible to harm from ingested fluorides and African-Americans suffer disproportionate amounts of kidney disease and diabetes in America, and…”

In the beginning, fluoridationists claimed that a worse case scenario would be very mild to mild fluorosis among 10% or less of the population. Yet in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where fluoridation began in 1945, they saw by 1962 that 35% of black residents and 15% of white residents were afflicted:

This higher rate for residents of African descent has held through the decades. Table 23 from the 2010 CDC report Surveillance for Dental Caries, Dental Sealants, Tooth Retention, Edentulism, and Enamel Fluorosis — United States, 1988–1994 and 1999–2002 is further documentation: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5403a1.htm#tab23
Another CDC report: Prevalence and Severity of Dental Fluorosis in the United States, 1999-2004: “Adolescents aged 12-15 had the highest prevalence of dental fluorosis (40.6%) (Figure 2). The prevalence is lower among older age groups. The lowest prevalence was among those aged 40-49 (8.7%). The prevalence of dental fluorosis among children aged 6-11 (33.4%) was lower than the prevalence among those aged 12-15 (40.6%).”

In the U.S., in addition to having much higher rates and worst severity of dental fluorosis, Native Peoples and residents of African descent also have more kidney disease, diabetes, and children with learning disabilities, all of which correlate with dental fluorosis, and could very well have the same cause – and quite likely do given that we know fluoride is a burden to kidneys, interferes with glucose metabolism, is a developmental neurotoxin and that the more you consume, the more likely and worse the impact (diabetics and kidney patients consume more water). It’s a vicious cycle.
